On November 4th, 2022, Robert Berkeley Smith II passed away at the age of 91.

He is survived by his Wife Marge Stansfield Smith of 72 years and his children Robert, Kathleen, Laurel, Robin and Todd. Robert's second son, David, preceded him in death in 2016. In-laws Mellanie, Rodney, Julie, 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Robert grew up in El Cerrito CA, with 5 other siblings, he attended El Cerrito High School where he met Marge. After he graduated in 1949, they were married in Reno on Christmas day in 1950. Robert enlisted in the Navy and had basic training in San Diego. After basic training, Robert and Marge were stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. They arrived in Virginia as two and left as five.

Their little family moved back to El Cerrito in 1954, where Robert worked in construction with his in-laws. They needed a house because their little family was growing, so they moved to Pleasant Hill in 1955, adding two more children to the bunch making a total of six. Like the Brady Bunch, the Smith family of Pleasant Hill had three boys and three girls.

When times were slow with his construction business, Robert would get jobs through the union. He worked on the Benicia Bridge in Martinez and the GM plant in Fremont (currently Tesla) and other various sites.

Robert continued in business as a licensed building contractor. His business grew and did well from the 1980's and beyond. Robert worked long hours and worked well into his 70s.

Robert enjoyed his family, loved  the Original Oakland Raiders, loved playing sports with his family, enjoyed playing cards and got the nick name "Papa Nil" playing Spades. He played Pleasant Hill Recreation softball with his sons, their friends, and one son-in-law for many years, later playing in a Senior League. He enjoyed camping and fishing anywhere; river, lake, or ocean. He also discovered Dr. Pepper, his drink of choice! There was always Dr. Pepper in the fridge.

He will be Missed by his family, friends and associates.
