On Thursday, May 27, 2021, Paul Crawford McKnight, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at age 93.
Paul was born on July 19, 1927 in Piedmont, CA to Paul and Vivian (Hoey) McKnight. A native son of the East Bay area, Paul graduated from Piedmont High School in 1945. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946. Paul went on to attend the University of California, Berkeley and proudly graduated in 1950 with a B.S in Business Administration. Following college, Paul set his sights on the insurance industry, where he quickly rose in the ranks of Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company. His sixty-year career culminated in him joining Saylor & Hill (est. 1933) and thriving in his partnership role with John Stock.
Paul loved to golf and was able to pursue this hobby at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. This passion also connected him to his home at Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA, where he happily spent weekends and holidays for fifty years. He also cherished the camaraderie he developed in his forty-five years of membership at the Bohemian Club of San Francisco. Paul cared deeply about his grandchildren and was a strong advocate of their educational attainment, career goals, and overall happiness. Most phone calls with them ended with the perfunctory “Go Bears!” as he was an avid supporter of Cal Berkeley’s stellar academics and athletics. Paul was known for his charm, quick wit, and zeal for life.
Paul was preceded in death by his father, Paul, mother, Vivian, brother, Jack, and wife, Joan. He is survived by his daughter, Carol, son-in-law, Ben, grandson, Streeter, and granddaughter, Chandler. At the request of Paul, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his name to the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, the Cal Athletics Fund, and/or Hospice East Bay.
