Irene Annie Berg

December 29, 1921 ~ January 17, 2021 (age 99)

On January 17, 2021, Irene Annie Russell Berg, our angel mother, completed her 99-year mortal journey and joined her loving husband, Warren (Bill) Berg, who preceded her in death in 2011.  She is survived by 4 children, A. Warren Berg (and Nelly), Arthur Berg (and Susan), David Berg (and Becky) and Deborah Christensen (and Perry), 30 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Joan Stam.  She is welcomed in Heaven by 3 siblings, her wonderful parents, and 4 grand/great-grandchildren, and many other loved ones.

She was born in Pontiac, Michigan on December 29, 1921, the oldest of 5 children. Her younger sister, Joan, says “She was the best big sister any of us could have had."  Their family moved to Salt Lake City when she was a child and later to Oakland, California where she met her husband.

Mom and Dad were sealed in marriage on June 16, 1941, in the Salt Lake Temple.  They spent most of their 70 years together in Hayward, California.  In addition to raising their 4 children, Irene completed child development coursework at Mills College in Oakland and established and ran a licensed pre-school for 26 years.  She was always patient, kind, and gentle - as Christ-like as a person can be.  Her quick sense of humor and sweet sunny disposition made her a joy to be around.  Her life’s crowning work was her family.  She and Dad devoted countless hours of creative and recreational time to their children, building a legacy of unity, spirituality, and fun memories.

Nearly all the days of her life she devoted time to reading. She loved the Scriptures, historical novels, the Church News and inspirational books, She also enjoyed The Far Side comic strip. She was a steadfast member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  During her last years, her son, Art (and Susan), moved her into their home. We often heard her say enthusiastically, “They are SO good to me.”  Her gratitude for every blessing brightened the good times and made the hard times bearable. We celebrate her exemplary life and will miss her deeply.

She will be laid to rest next to Dad at Lone Tree Cemetery in Hayward, California in a private family service.
