Hoda Marie Hamaoui

Resident of Walnut Creek, California

1938 - 2022

Hoda was born in Cairo, Egypt to Georgette Romanos and Ephraim Sabet in 1938. She was the first of six surviving children and loved her siblings dearly. In 1955, Hoda met Mony, her beloved husband of almost 61 years, through classes at Cairo University. They courted for six years before getting married in 1961. Many adventures followed these two, including emigration in 1969 to the United States where the pair started life in Queens, New York before their first daughter, Dina, was born. In 1976, Mony’s career relocated the family to Hong Kong. During that time, the family welcomed their second daughter, Amy, and enjoyed travels to most of Southeast Asia. This fueled Hoda and Mony’s love of travel and new cultures, which took them to hundreds of destinations throughout their life together.

In 1980, they returned to the US and moved to where they will always consider home, Southern California. They spent nearly two decades living in Arcadia and it was here that Hoda deepened her community of friends. In 1987, a surprise work opportunity invited Mony to London, England, so Hoda packed up the house and moved the girls and the dog, again. Hoda loved life in London, which fed her lifelong passion for history and art. They returned to Southern California three years later and in 1997, Mony and Hoda settled into retirement in Huntington Beach where she became deeply involved with the Assistance League and St. Anne’s Church. Hoda loved her volunteer work, her family, and her friends. She treasured bringing people together, whether it was by hosting yoga class, book club, the church’s annual fish dinner and raffle, or cooking legendary feasts for everyone who visited her home. In Fall 2021, Hoda and Mony made the brave decision to move to Northern California, so they could spend more time with their daughters, son-in-law, Josh, and two wonderful granddaughters, Sabine and Ruby. Although this time was very sweet, there was more we hoped she would share with us in these next few years. She passed away peacefully in July 2022 surrounded by her family.

Hoda is survived by her devoted husband, Mony, her daughters Dina and Amy, her son-in-law Josh, her grandchildren Ruby and Sabine, and her siblings Farid and Mary. Hoda is predeceased by her sister, Laila, and her brothers, Hani and Alex. We will miss her dearly.
