George Holton Greer, 87, of Walnut Creek, California, peacefully passed away on April 24, 2021, surrounded by loved ones.
George is predeceased by his parents Frank and Helen, two older brothers Duane and Wayne, and son Joseph. He is survived by his loving wife Monica of 59 years, his children Randolph, Natalie and Jonathan, and grandson Avery Fischbach Greer.
George was born on January 18, 1934, on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School in O’Neill, Nebraska in 1952, George was drafted into the Army to serve in the Korean War. He was deployed to Germany and promoted to corporal in the 101 Airborne Division, 187 Infantry Regiment until he was honorably discharged in 1955. He then pursued a degree in civil engineering at Seattle University and did post-graduate work at the University of Washington.
In 1962, George married his college sweetheart Monica. He worked as a civil engineer for Seattle architect firms and in 1975 pursued an opportunity to work for Kiewit Construction in California, prompting the couple’s move to Walnut Creek. He worked for the company for 20 years until his retirement in 1995. George then began the next phase of his life, pursuing his hobbies and time spent with family and friends.
During summers in college, George worked in Alaska as a deckhand on a tugboat. He always looked back on these days with great fondness, an experience that developed into a lifelong love of boating and all things nautical. He shared this interest as a member of Sportsman Yacht Club in Antioch, California, where he enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of fellow members for 35 years and worked on the restoration of his boat, Princess Natalie, named after his daughter.
George was a long-time parishioner of St. John Vianney Catholic Church. He enjoyed bowling in the church league with his wife and was a member of the Knights of Columbus whilst in Seattle. For relaxation, George enjoyed reading and was an avid fan of Louis L’Amour novels (he read them all).
