Evelyn Theresa Lawton, 94, of Pleasant Hill, CA passed away on February 27, 2022.
Evelyn was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming on May 30, 1927, to Adelaide and Michael Bernica. She was the eldest of four children – including surviving sisters Dorothy and Edith, and deceased brother Donald. She grew up in Cheyenne and attended St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1944. She then attended St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana, for a year and then graduated from UCLA with a degree in Education.
After teaching P.E. in Oakland schools, she married John F. Lawton in 1951 in Berkeley, CA. They moved to San Leandro, raised five daughters, and were active for many years at St. Felicitas Church. In 1975 they moved to Pleasant Hill, and became members of Christ the King Church.
Evelyn returned to school to earn a Masters Degree in Counseling from Cal State East Bay. She was hired by Berkeley Unified School District and worked for over 30 years as a junior high and high school counselor, concluding her career in 1992 when she retired from Berkeley High East Campus.
Evelyn volunteered for many years as a Girl Scout leader and a Mariner Scout skipper in San Leandro. She was an avid golfer and served as president of the Adams Springs Women’s Golf Club in Cobb, CA.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters Karen Arntzen, Patricia Cuthbertson, Janet Volkar, Susan Pedrick, and Kathryn Von Dohre, as well as 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.
