Mary Anne Rakela
February 16, 1928 - March 9th 2018
Mary Anne Rakela passed away last Friday. She was a loving mother and a true inspiration, who lived life to the fullest. Mary was born and grew up in Richmond. She graduated from the University of Berkeley. Here, she would meet her future husband, Frank V. Rakela. They had six children together and lived in Yuba City, California. Working at home she started her own seamstress and hat-making business, Meri Designs. She was also president of St Isidore’s Catholic Church Parents Association. Mary acquired a teaching credential from Sacramento State University. During her 20 years as a teacher, she founded the Rakela Academy of Dance for 17 years which put on many performances including an annual Nutcracker. She is survived by her children, Nancy Rakela, Christy Rakela, Kathy Rakela, Theresa Rakela, and Jim Rakela, their respective spouses, Tom Trabin, Rik Pittendorfer, Mark Peterson, and Karen Haselden, as well as her six grandchildren., Melissa Peterson, Cody Rakela, Desiree Rakela, Parsifal Pittendorfer, Tristan Pittendorfer, and Chrystal Rakela. Mary’s generous, loving, and creative spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at Sunset View Mortuary and Cemetery, 101 Colusa Avenue in El Cerrito, California on March 19th. A viewing will be from 10:00am to 10:45am. A chapel service will be at 11:00am, followed by the burial and a reception.
