Henry Mena Jr

January 5, 1930 - July 10, 2018

 

Henry Mena Jr passed away on Tuesday, July 10 of natural causes.  He touched many lives and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Henry was born in Oakland, CA to Henry Mena Sr and Soledad Mena.  He was the eldest of four children.  He graduated from St Mary’s High School in Oakland and joined the the Air Force upon graduation.   He served as an interpreter and instructor in aircraft mechanics and maintenance while in the service.  Near the end of his last  the billet in the Air Force, he met his future wife of 67 years, Angeline Tsevelekos, who was studying at the nearby University of Illinois. Upon leaving the Air Force, Henry studied for and received a degree in accounting from Millikin University in Decatur Illinois. Eventually, the family moved to California, his home state, and he took up a career as a teacher in the San Francisco Unified School District for the next 35 years.

Henry is survived by his loving wife, Angeline, devoted children Michael Mena MD of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, Argy Leyton (Kirk) of Rancho Cucamonga and Gregory Mena of Pleasant Hill and grandchildren Katy (Joseph) Berkley of Chattanooga Tennessee, Alexia (Kevin) Loughman of Nashville, John-Michael Mena of Cheyenne, Steven Leyton of Rancho Cucamonga, Maria Mena of Pleasant Hill, Nicholas Mena of Pleasant Hill and one great-grandchild, Cora Loughman of Nashville.  He is also survived by his sister, Micaela (John) Baker of San Francisco. He is preceded in death by a son, George Mena of Pleasant Hill.  His loving and kind spirit will be missed by all who knew him.

Trisagion is Sunday, July 15, 7 pm and funeral is Monday, July 16 11 am at the Ascension Cathedral, 4700 Lincoln Avenue, Oakland.  Burial to follow at Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette, CA.
