Leola Loots, former resident of Pleasant Hill, passed away unexpected on Feb 15th in San Francisco, California.  Leola grew up in Manson, Iowa with her 5 sisters and one brother.  Leola was a model student earning top scores in the Iowa aptitude tests as a high school student and later earned her Master’s degree from NYU.  She married Thomas DeMers and had two sons, Damon and Dustin whom she raised in a house in Walnut Creek.  Leola was a dedicated Mother who loved her kids dearly.  She viewed child-rearing as her life’s work and purpose.

Leola worked as a speech teacher at Diablo Valley College for over 12 years and helped a variety of students harness language as a means to better express themselves in the world.  She was widely liked and respected as a teacher.  She later attended a Divinity school with the intention of becoming a pastor, but left after becoming disenchanted with church politics.  She moved to Independence, MO in 2004.

Leola connected to those around her intuitively and effortlessly, and often left an indelible mark on those who crossed her path.  Her natural empathy and sensitivity helped her see deeply into the lives of those close to her, and she used this gift to relate, mentor and heal.  Leola was dearly loved and will be sorely missed.
