John "Jack" Evans CherneDecember 12, 1922 ~ March 30, 2017 (age 94)
John "Jack" Evans Cherne peacefully passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on March 30, 2017. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Geraldine Percy Cherne (Kauffman) and his brother, Robert Cherne. Jack is survived by his sister Jane Halnan, his brother and sister in law, William and Elaine Halnan. Jack was the proud father of four children, John Robert Cherne, his wife Lezlee, Thomas William Cherne, Francine Nancy Cherne, her husband Mark Poore, James Anthony Cherne, and his wife Jill. Jack has eight beautiful grandchildren, all of which he loved dearly, Jesse Adam Belchamber, Kara Leah Belchamber, Nadine Ella Belchamber, Amanda Jean Cherne, Nicholas James Cherne, Sarah Cherne-Bast, Laura Cherne, and Evan Gerald Cherne. He is also the loving great grandfather of Kali, Izayah, Cora, Kalia, Emma, and Mackenzie. Jack was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during world war II and served beside his father, John Paul Cherne. He was a 47 year employee at Pacific Bell. Jack enjoyed outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, camping, and bicycling. Jack had belonged to the Sierra Club and was a former B.S.A. Scout Master. In his recent years, Jack enjoyed going to the gym during the week and shopping at Trader Joe’s every Friday. He enjoyed sitting in front of his home reading and chatting with the passing neighbors. Jack was a very intelligent, kind, empathetic person and will be missed by all who’s life he touched. A memorial service to celebrate his life will take place at 11:30 AM, Thursday, April 6 at Oak Park Hills Chapel , 3111 North Main St. Walnut Creek, preceded by a viewing starting at 10:00 AM. Donations in his memory can be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars or Hope Hospice.
