Felicita Chieko (Kato) Moriguchi
Resident of Pleasant Hill Dec. 30, 1933 – June 11, 2010
Felicita “Chie” Moriguchi passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 11th. Throughout her life, she encountered many struggles but never lost her generous, loving and kind spirit.
Chie was born in Lima, Peru on Dec. 30, 1933 as the third of eight children. The family was relocated during WWII to an internment camp in Crystal City, TX. Following the war, the Kato’s moved to Stockton, CA where they were able to work and live on a farm. Eventually, the family migrated to San Francisco, where Chie graduated from Washington High School. In 1956, she met Richard Moriguchi and they wed in January of 1957. Shortly afterwards, Richard was drafted into military service. During this time, Chie gave birth to a daughter, Karen and a son, Ron. After fulfilling his military obligation, Richard and family bought a home in San Bruno. Their third child, Timmy, was born in 1963. Tragically, Timmy passed away due to a congenital heart defect in 1964. Chie gave birth to her fourth child, Jeffrey, in 1970.
The family relocated to New York for Richard’s job in 1975. It was during this time that she worked towards and received her U.S. citizenship. In 1978, the family moved back to San Bruno. Chie worked several jobs over the years in the San Bruno area, while raising the family. In 1986, the family moved and settled in Pleasant Hill. Chie was deeply involved with the Redress Bill passed by Congress and signed into law in 1988, and provided key documentation that allowed many Japanese Peruvians to be included. She retired from her favorite job with the San Mateo County Mental Health Division in 1996.
Chie is survived by her loving husband, Richard; devoted children Karen Griffiths (David) of Waco, TX; Ron Moriguchi (Maelene) of Pleasant Hill, Jeffrey Moriguchi of Pleasant Hill and grandchildren Matthew & Elysse Moriguchi and Miles Griffiths.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate the life of this truly special individual on Saturday, June 19 at Christ the King Church, 199 Brandon Rd, Pleasant Hill at 11:00AM.
